No Mayo? No HSS? Healthgrades Ortho Excellence (?) Awards Announced

No Mayo Clinic? No HSS? No NYU? No Keck USC? No Rush? No TBI? No Rothman? Why weren’t the major academic centers of excellence in orthopedic and spine care on the Healthgrades annual Excellence in Orthopedics Award list?

Healthgrades Operating Company Inc., a company that provides information on U.S. health care providers, has released its 2022 specialty excellence awards for orthopedic surgery.

The Orthopedic Surgery Excellence Award™ recognizes “hospitals that deliver superior patient outcomes in back and neck surgery, spinal fusion, hip fracture treatment, hip replacement, and total knee replacement.”

According to Healthgrades, the award-winning hospitals were evaluated in four of the five most commonly performed orthopedic procedures (back and neck surgery, spinal fusion, hip fracture treatment, hip replacement and total knee replacement) using MedPAR (Medicare Provider Analysis and Review) data, which includes rates of complications.

Healthgrades than calculates a “volume-weighted average z-score for the combination of the joint replacement procedures (both are required) and for the combination of spinal fusion and back and neck surgeries (only one is required).” The company also calculates a z-score for hip fracture treatment.

Finally, according to Healthgrades, the score used to determine which hospital would be granted this excellence in orthopedic care award is an “evenly weighted average of the joint replacement z-score, the combined back and neck z-score, and the hip fracture z-score.”
